Eating out with Coeliac Disease

Published on

This is the last post in the series for Coeliac Awareness Week. Eating out is difficult for anyone with Coeliac disease or anyone with a food intolerance, you're putting your health in someone elses hand, and that's scary. I've had some horror stories whilst eating out which I won't disclose, way to much TMI, but for now here are some of my top restaurants, the Peterborough edition.

The Pizza Parlour

When I heard this was opening I was so excited. They do gluten free and vegan pizzas, hallelujah! The restaurant is so clued up about allergies, which is really reassuring. They cook the pizzas in separate ovens and pretty much all the toppings are gluten free too. Definitely one of the best tasting gluten free pizzas! They do gluten free pastas too, but I haven't tried these yet.

The Argo Lounge

I was surprised to see that The Argo Lounge had its own gluten free menu. For such a small place, it's quite extensive. You can have burgers with gluten free bread, tapas and curries and all really affordable too. The cocktails are to die for as well, which always makes everything better!

Turtle Bay

Turtle Bay has only recently come to Peterborough and the amount of gluten free foods they do is extensive. Pretty much everything on the menu is gluten free, except the obvious stuff like flatbreads and sandwhiches.

The Lightbox

This is a fairly new place and has only been open a few months. I went for breakfast a couple of months ago and they offer gluten free bread, yay! They also do gluten free cakes and offer a gluten free afternoon tea if you want something sweet. It's definitley a good thing for a new restaurant to offer food that caters for intolerances and is a great stetp in the right direction.

Bills

On the pricier side, but Bills offers a great gluten free menu, if you fancy a treat. The menu is called Very Low Gluten, but don't let this put you off. It just means the food is cooked in the same kitchen, which can be expected and I haven't had any problems to date. You can pick from Thai Green Curry, Steaks and Burgers, so there's definitley a wide variety. The brownies are also gluten free, and are delicious. They make you feel normal again!

Other restuarants that offer gluten free options are

  • Nandos

  • Pizza Express

  • Prezzo

  • Carluccios

  • Chiquitos

  • Wagamamas

  • The Queens Head

Fancy a takeaway?

  • The Banyan Tree is great if you want an Indian and is my personal fave. You'll find with most Indian restuarants and takeaways that they don't actually use gluten in their products and cook everything with gram flour. Just avoid the obvious things like naan breads and pastries!

  • Kung Fu Kitchen is the best chinese. I never thought I would ever eat Chinese again, so when I saw the allergy menu in the window I was so happy.

So that concludes my posts for this week! I've had so much fun writing these but also reflecting on how far I've come in the past two years. Coeliac Disease is a serious condition and needs to be treated on par with other conditions. Hopefully I've highlighted the importance of it this week and everyone has learnt about Coeliac Disease.
